As we celebrate Volunteer Week next, we’re shining a spotlight on one inspiring story from Diana, our Community Champion volunteer, and fabulous fundraiser, whose dedication and passion have made a real difference over a number of years!

Our Community Champion - Diana 

At Hearts Together, the heart of our work lies not only in the support we offer to families during their most difficult moments, but in the generosity and kindness of those who choose to give back. Diana is one of those people, a true example of how our volunteers help shape and sustain the spirit of our charity. Diana first discovered the Hearts Together Hospital Hotel two years ago, when a close family member was admitted to Derriford Hospital. Faced with frequent and exhausting journeys from Cornwall, she found solace and support in a last-minute booking at our hospital hotel.

“They helped so much at a difficult and uncertain time,” she reflects. “We wanted to help, and to keep in touch when we realised they were a charity, so we started fundraising.”

Since then, Diana’s relationship with Hearts Together has grown into something truly special. Last year, she became our very first Community Champion – a volunteer role created to help raise awareness and share the mission of Hearts Together with the wider community. From speaking at local organisations, running car boot and table-top sales, to taking on an annual sponsored walk, Diana is passionate about giving back in every way she can.

“I think my most memorable moment was my very first morning at HT,” she recalls. “One of the wonderful staff members, Jess, came out of reception and asked how things were and how our relative was. That was just amazing. Very special, incredibly kind and compassionate, I was so touched and grateful.”

It’s this people-centred approach that sets Hearts Together apart. Whether it’s a quiet word of comfort at reception, free transport to and from the hospital, or access to counselling and practical help, our team is committed to supporting guests with warmth, respect and care. Volunteers like Diana play a vital role in extending that care beyond the walls of our hotel. Her efforts help ensure that more families can access our services, often when they have nowhere else to turn.

“Anyone thinking of fundraising for Hearts Together, I would say please do it,” Diana encourages. “It is hugely rewarding, very easy to organise and you can do as little or as much as you like. Most of all, the staff really appreciate everything you do.” She adds, “It is certainly no ordinary hotel. People are amazed when I tell them about all the services – the free parking, the transport, the counselling. They are stunned by what is offered and how much compassion is behind it.”

We are incredibly grateful to Diana and all of our volunteers who help us continue our mission. Hearts Together is more than a place to stay – it is a lifeline, made possible through the dedication of people who care. Thank you, Diana, for being one of them.
